What is Accessibility?
— Designing so that everyone can use it, including people with disabilities
Accessibility is a design principle aimed at ensuring that everyone - regardless of physical, intellectual abilities, or the devices they use - can access and use the product easily and effectively.
In UX/UI, accessibility is not just about "goodwill," but is a core part of User-Centered Design. It helps the product not only be visually appealing but also easy to use for everyone. For example: visually impaired individuals need screen reader software, those with low vision need high contrast text, and those who can't use a mouse need keyboard navigation.
Some accessibility principles according to international standards (WCAG):
Perceivable: Content must be presented or marked up appropriately – for example, images must have alt text.
Operable: Users can navigate using a keyboard or voice, not reliant on a mouse.
Understandable: Interfaces should be simple, with clear and consistent terminology.
Robust: Works well with various browsers, devices, and assistive technologies.
Real-world examples
Apple HIG encourages the use of Dynamic Type so users can adjust text size as needed.
Material Design by Google provides clear guidelines on contrast ratio, touch target size, and motion to avoid causing discomfort for users with sensory issues.
Why is accessibility important?
Ethically: You are designing for people, and everyone deserves a good experience.
Legally: Many countries have laws requiring digital products to meet accessibility standards.
Business-wise: An accessible product can reach more users → increasing potential customers.
According to Nielsen Norman Group, accessibility does not make your design "lacking uniqueness"; rather, it makes the experience more inclusive and humane. Good design is design for everyone – not just "normal" users.
