Brainstorming

What is brainstorming?

Brainstorming (also known as thought shower) is a creative technique used to generate a large number of ideas in a short time. In UX/UI design, brainstorming often occurs in the early stages – such as when defining solutions, building wireframes, or coming up with new feature ideas.

The goal of brainstorming is not to find the "perfect idea" immediately but to generate as many ideas as possible, regardless of right – wrong – good – bad. The "the more, the better" mindset helps to broaden perspectives and uncover unexpected possibilities.

Basic principles when brainstorming:

According to guidelines from Nielsen Norman Group and reputable UX documents, there are several golden rules to make brainstorming effective:

  1. No judgments: All ideas are welcome. Don't "kill" an idea just because it sounds silly.

  2. Encourage quantity: The more ideas, the better the chance of finding a good solution.

  3. Build on others' ideas: An incomplete idea can lead to a breakthrough idea.

  4. Free thinking: Allow yourself to think "outside the box".

Implementing brainstorming in design:

  • Individual or small group (2–5 people): Use sticky notes, whiteboards, FigJam, or Miro.

  • Set a specific problem: For example: “How can we help users register accounts faster?”

  • Time limit: Usually 10–30 minutes.

  • Synthesize and group ideas after the brainstorming session.

Real-world example:

When redesigning the onboarding screen for a language learning app, the UX team organized a 20-minute brainstorming session. Ideas included: using vibrant images, allowing voice registration, integrating mini-games to assess levels,… Some ideas were later selected to prototype and test with users.

Why is brainstorming important in UX/UI?

  • Helps to break the routine thinking.

  • Creates a democratic space – everyone can contribute.

  • Accelerates the process of finding creative, feasible solutions.

  • Acts as a stepping stone for stages like wireframing, prototyping, or A/B testing.
