What is Quantitative Research?

Quantitative Research is a method that helps us measure user behavior with specific numbers. Instead of deeply exploring like qualitative research, quantitative research focuses on collecting data from many users to identify trends or common behavioral patterns.

If you've ever seen a chart indicating that "70% of users did not complete the registration," that is the result of quantitative research.

Main goals of quantitative research:

• Answer questions like "how many?", "what percentage?", "how many people have this problem?"

• Help assess the severity or prevalence of a UX issue

• Compare the effectiveness of two A/B design versions

Some common methods:

• Surveys: send Google Forms or Typeform to collect feedback from hundreds or even thousands of people

• A/B Testing: compare the effectiveness of two different designs (e.g., does the red button or the blue button get more clicks?)

• Analytics (Google Analytics, Hotjar, Mixpanel…): track behaviors such as click rates, scroll depth, bounce rates

When to use it?

• When you need to confirm an issue observed from qualitative research

• When you want to persuade stakeholders with specific data

• When you need to measure the performance of the design over time

Example

You redesign the landing page for the English learning app. After 2 weeks, you use A/B testing to compare the old and new versions. The results show that the new version increases the registration rate by 25%. This is clear evidence with data support for the decision to keep the new design.

Conclusion

Quantitative Research helps designers make decisions based on measurable data.
However, data does not tell the whole story – you need to combine it with qualitative research to understand both the quantity and the reasons behind the numbers.

Good designers not only have good instincts but also know how to use data to prove and improve their solutions.
